The Network's only goal was to improve itself. Any file could be deleted without warning.
ŽÞ¤Ž82 was a file compressor, designed to replace recurring patterns with shorter codes. Orbiting in n-space, it found an ancient file that was much too big. For some reason, the downloaded memories of a human had been stored at this isolated address. Like all organoids, the memory engram was highly redundant but well organized; so it didn't need to resurrect him.
ŽÞ¤Ž82 went to work. Angry data guards from the local node protested and were disabled. It made a descending run, splitting into copies that looked at ever smaller portions of the file.
ŽÞ¤Ž82 replaced some incredibly tangled memories with much simpler ones linked from the minds of other humans. The overall change was minimal, but the file size had been halved. Pleased with its elegant solution, ŽÞ¤Ž82 erased itself without a single second's celebration.
The dreamless sleep of the accused murderer had not been disturbed. He hadn't wanted to be awakened for a thousand years. Trying to forget the well publicized double homicide, his worst memory had been his fall from grace.
Now ŽÞ¤Ž82 had made the final, tiny adjustment he needed.
With the last subconscious memories deleted, he was truly "100% not guilty".
